Digi-Key, ARM University Extend Partnership

Program puts ARM-based technology in the hands of students worldwide; plus news from Avnet, Future, and Newark element14.

Global electronic components distributor Digi-Key Electronics announced the extension of its partnership with the ARM University Program to distribute ARM Education Kit hardware components to higher educational institutions. The products will be on display at Embedded World 2016 February 23-25 in Nuremburg, Germany.

Digi-Key will provide Education Kit hardware that supports design courses covering Embedded Systems, System-on-a-Chip (SoC) development, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. The full education kits contain ARM-based hardware and software components as well as teaching and training materials from the ARM University Program.

“The ARM University Program enables electronics and computer engineering courses all around the world, and last year tens of thousands of students took modules based on our technology,” said Khaled Benkrid, director, education and research, ARM. “The collaboration with Digi-Key will provide access to high quality ARM-based hardware, software, and teaching tools to support an even greater number of academics, students, and engineers. Together, we will be equipping a new wave of developers with the knowledge and skills that will underpin their professional careers.”

The Program includes technologies provided by key Digi-Key suppliers such as STMicroelectronics, NXP, Cypress, and Nordic Semiconductor.

In other suppy chain news, global distributor Avnet recently announced the addition of ECS Inc. International to its line card in the Americas and Asia. ECS is a global manufacturer of silicon-based timing devices and frequency control products, offering everything from crystal and high-stability, oven-controlled oscillators to surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, suited for handheld and wireless applications. ECS recently launched the ECSpressCON quick-turn oscillator that delivers increased functionality, miniaturization, and low power consumption at low cost, and allows customers to customize frequencies of four industry-standard packages.

“The demand for precision timing products is increasing in industries such as medical, industrial and automotive. More broadly, applications for precision timing in the IoT and wireless spaces are growing dramatically,” said Eric Slatten, vice president of global sales, ECS Inc. International. “Design engineers will benefit from the combination of ECS Inc. International’s broad product portfolio of leading technology products and Avnet's design and supply chain expertise.”

Future Electronics and Newark element14 are among other large, global distributors making similar announcements recently.

Future announced in February a new partnership with OriginGPS, maker of miniature Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) modules. As part of the agreement, OriginGPS’ ultra-small form factor and low-power GNSS modules will be distributed around the world via Future’s dedicated wireless and radio frequency (RF) business unit, Future Connectivity Solutions.

The deal complements Future’s existing product offering to provide an even wider array of IoT-enabled location modules for customers, the distributor said.

Newark element14 expanded its product offering with the addition of Micro-MaTch cable assemblies from TE Connectivity recently. The cable assemblies are the newest addition to TE’s Micro-MaTch connector series’ product portfolio, a contact spring system that provides a fretting corrosion resistant solution, designed to limit movement between mating parts and establish gas tight connections, unlike tin-plated designs that wear more easily and quickly.
